The city of Olomouc is not only the centre of Olomouc region, but is also university city and a historical metropolis of the whole Moravia. Thanks to its rich history, one can find in Olomouc and its surroundings many beautiful sights, that are definitely worth visiting.
Just a few meters from the conference venues, on the Upper Square (which is the main square of the city), there is one of the most splendid sights Olomouc can offer – the Holy Trinity Column, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and also is the tallest monument of its kind in Czech Republic. It is 35 metres tall, with a chapel in its centre. On the Upper Square, there is also a historical Town Hall with famous astronomical clock and with a town hall tower, from where one can enjoy a view over the city.
A next sight that definitely should not be missed is Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, with second tallest tower and the second largest bell in the Czech Republic. Right in the middle of the city, there is a Saint Michael’s Church, that is considered to be the most beautiful baroque cathedral of Olomouc. Another church worth visiting is Saint Maurice’s Church, which has the biggest organ in the middle Europe.
When you are arriving to Olomouc from almost any direction, you can see Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Kopeček (“The Holly Hillock”) near the Olomouc. It is a significant national cultural historic building, that is surrounded by nature and offers a beautiful view over the whole city.
In Olomouc we also recommend visiting Bezruč Park and Exhibition Centre Flora, that offers beautiful parks, botanical gardens and greenhouses. Near the Bezruč park is also Fort Science with many interactive exhibitions and a digital planetarium.
However, Olomouc is not known only for its cultural and historical sights, but also for many renowned cafes and restaurants. And since we are in Moravia, we cannot forget about wine shops and cellars.
